George W. Melby was born on August 19, 1893 in Rochester, Minnesota to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Melby. He grew up in Milltown WI.

At the age of 24, Private Melby entered service to defend his country in May of 1918, joining Company B 364th Infantry. He trained at Camp Lewis in Washington.

In September of 1918 George and his brothers at arms "went over the top" three times in Germany's famous Black Forest in the Province of Hesse. On the third charge, Private Melby sustained six separate wounds to his shoulders and head.

While recovering in a hospital in France, George was stricken with pneumonia. He died on October 12, 1918. He was buried in a French cemetery for American soldiers overlooking the Saone river.
